The common peony has been seen as a symbol of compassion, prosperity, and honor since the Ancient Greek times. The flower is believed to be named after Paeon, the Greek physicians of the Gods. After Paeon used a peony root to heal Pluto and received criticisms, Pluto transformed himself into a peony because he knew it was a flower others would admire. In Medieval times, peony's were used to cure a number of diseases and to attract prosperity into families' homes.
